تفاوت above و over در انگلیسی

گرامر انگلیسی  | تفاوت above و over در انگلیسی Above و Over دو واژه با معناهای نزدیک بوده و گاه در نگارش و گفتار به اشتباه به جای یکدیگر استفاده می شوند. 
 

1. higher than: above or over

* Above and Over can both mean higher than.

eg: The water came up above/ over our knees.

eg: Can you see the bird above/ over the tree?

2. not directly over: above

* We prefer above when one thing is not directly over another.

eg: We've got a little house above the lake.

3. Covering: over

* We prefer over when one thing covers and/ or touches another.

eg: The rain clouds are over the mountains.

eg: He put on a coat over his pyjamas.

* We use over or across wgen one thing crosses another.

eg: The plane was flying over/ across Denmark.

eg: Electricity cables strech over/ across the fields.

4. Measurements: above

* Above is used inmeasurments of temerature and height, and in other cases where we think of a vertical scale.

eg: The temperature is three degrees above zero.

eg: The summit of Everest is 8000 meters above sea level.

eg: She's well above average in intelligence.

5. ages, speeds, more than: over

* We usually use over not above to talk about ages and speeds and to mean more than.

eg: You have to be over 18 to watch this film.

eg: The police said he was driving at over 110 mph.

eg: There were over 100000 people at the festival.

6. See above/ over

* In a book or paper, see above means 'look at something written before' ; see over means 'look on the next page'.
