FORMING THE PRESENT CONTINUOUS

The present continuous of any verb is composed of two parts - the present tense of the verb to be + the present participle of the main verb.

(The form of the present participle is: base+ing, e.g. talking, playing, moving, smiling)

THE SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE IS USED:

• To express habits, general truths, repeated actions or unchanging situations, emotions and wishes:
  I smoke (habit); I work in London (unchanging situation); London is a large city (general truth
• To give instructions or directions:
  You walk for two hundred meters, then you turn left.
• To express fixed arrangements, present or future:
  Your exam starts at 09.00
• To express future time, after some conjunctions: after, when, before, as soon as, until:
  He'll give it to you when you come next Saturday.

Be careful! The simple present is not used to express actions happening now.

وزن در شعر انگلیسی را با دو سنجه ارزیابی می کنند:

نخست ترتیب فشار (stress) در هر پایه است. پایه یا foot کوتاه ترین واحد وزنی در شعر انگلیسی است. برای مثال واژه ugly یک پایه با دو هجا است و ترتیب فشار روی آن بصورت (- +) است. واژه perform هم یک پایه با دو هجا و ترتیب فشاریِ برعکس (+ -) است. قالب های پایه ای در شعر انگلیسی بدین ترتیب است:

1. Iambic (+ -): هجای نخست بی فشار، هجای دوم با فشار before, within, divine, the bus, a book

مثال در شعر انگلیسی:

That time of year thou mayst in me behold
When yellow leaves, or none, or few, do hang

Simile، (تشبيه) : همسان انگاری يا مقايسه مستقيم و آشكار دو چيز را Simile می ناميم. در این آرایه ی ادبی، معمولا بطور مستقیم از ادات تشبیه (like, as,…) استفاده می شود:

Examples:  She is like a beautiful rose

او مانند گلی زیبا است.

                  That eagle flies straight as an arrow                 

آن عقاب چون تیری مستقیم پرواز می کند.

                          Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day                  

                                 Though art more lovely and more temporate                  

(Shakespeare) 

اجازه می دهی تو را به یک روز تابستانی تشبیه کنم؟  

گرچه تو دوست داشتنی تر و معتدل تری!

                    Forlorn! The very world is like a bell                  

                        To toll me back from thee to my sole self                  

تنها و بیکس! دنیا چون ناقوس کلیسا است که می زنگد

و مرا از پیش تو نزد خویشم می خواند

Metaphor، (استعاره)‌: همسان انگاری يا مقايسه غير مستقيم دو چيز، بدون استفاده از  as, like,  resembles, seems …

Examples:  World of music

تشبیه موسیقی به جهان، بدون استفاده از ادات تشبیه.

                    Life is a beach                 

تشبیه زندگی به ساحل، بدون استفاده از ادات تشبیه.

                 No man is an island                 

در این مثال، بدون استفاده از ادات تشبیه، انسان با جزیره مقایسه شده است.

نكته: نمونه يك را در نظر بگيريد. در اين مثال، موسيقی، موضوع تشبیه است. جهان، استعاره است، و بالاخره “پهناوری” و “گستردگی”، وجه شباهت آن دو است. بنابراين:

 Topic: music            Image: world            Point of similarity: immensity               

اکنون topic، image، و point of similarity را در دو مثال دیگر بیابید.

• Acrostic

قالبی شعری که در آن، نخستین حرف یا آخرین حرف مصراع ها واژه، عبارت، یا جمله ای کلیدی می سازند. جفری چاسر (شاعر ادبیات انگلیسی میانه) شعری 24 قطعه ای دارد که اگر اولین حرف نخستین واژه از هر استانزا (قطعه) را به یکدیگر متصل کنیم، الفبای انگلیسی (a,b,c,d,e,…) حاصل می شود.

مثال: «بدرود»، اثر William Anderson Ellis:

Farewell, dear, young friends

though parting is painful

A sad separation approaches at last

Revilers may spurn me

lost friends may chide me

Even then with much pleasure

I’ll think on the past

When rivers divide us and

hills rise between us

Even then I’ll remember

your childhood bright days

Let not sad reflections

a moment beguile you

Look forward with hope on

future’s bright

•Ballad

شعری «کوتاه» و «روایی» است که بیشتر به منظور خواندن آوازی ساخته می شده است. بالاد یا تصنیف را معمولا به دو دسته تقسیم می کنند:

الف. «folk ballad» که در قرن 16 و 17 در بریتانیا به اوج شکوفایی رسید. چون تصنیف های محلی سینه به سینه منتقل شده اند، در بیشتر موارد نویسندگان این گونه از تصنیف ها را نمی شناسیم.

ب. «literary ballad» که توسط یک شاعر و به تقلید از تصنیف های محلی سروده می شود. مثال:

Going abroad isn’t always a realistic option for becoming fluent in a language, so here are some tips to improve your English speaking, and increase your fluency at home.

1. Completely surround yourself with English

Forget about learning a language from 1-2 hours of reading a book. Is it possible? Maybe. Is it realistic? NO. Getting yourself used to the language is a must for improving your speaking fluency. How can you surround yourself?

Easy:

• Listen and read the news in English. There are plenty of online resources from different countries. (BBC, CNN, ABC)
• Play English music at home or in your car. Get a music player licensed in your country for more options (ie: Spotify)
• Read lyrics while listening. If you’re not sure of English music, check out: The Billboard Hot 100 list
• Translate your favorite songs into English!
• English podcasts
• Expand your TV and movie choices to more English (use English subtitles). Think: Netflix.
• Watch fun YouTube videos, or from another video source. (Vsauce is a very interesting channel)
• Follow English blogs. Google (your interest) + blog. For example: rock music blog.
• Explore the English section at your local library.
• Join English clubs/groups, (locally or virtually) Check out local newspapers, magazines, or online: International MeetUp.
• Use social media to connect with English speakers across the world. Don’t forget to status update, tweet, and comment in English!
• Hobbies in English! Cook using an English recipe, craft or build with English instructions.
• Going to the store? Things to do? Practice writing all your lists in English!
• Listen to English audio while you sleep! 

2. Stop thinking that only speaking will improve your English speaking fluency

Being able to speak does not happen overnight, and it definitely doesn’t happen without knowing some grammar. Reading exposes you to new vocabulary, proper word order, sentences construction, and can introduce you to new grammar naturally. Writing is a way for you to give more attention to making your own correct sentences, and using correct English grammar. Studying all skills in English is extremely important for speaking fluency.
